was bred by Lesley Trow who owns the Winterwell kennel.
Zak and his litter brothers and sisters were born on Beatrix Potter’s birthday and are named after characters from her books.
Zak has a lovely gentle nature and is a delight to live with. He is extremely intelligent, and very quick to learn. He is the escape artist in the family; he can open any door in the house. Door opens inwards, no problem to Zak, he uses his paw as we would use our hand to push the handle down and pull the door towards him; the only way to stop him from letting himself and the other dogs out into the garden if you want to keep them in is to lock the door with the key!
He has inherited strong working instincts from his mother, Hety, and is an excellent retriever particularly from water, a trait he has passed onto his offspring.
Zak's latest accomplishment is 'chief chicken herder' our neighbour acquired some chickens last year which are 'free range' and they frequently 'range' into our garden. This makes it impossible to let all our GSPs out without first checking the garden for chickens. Zak is now an expert at very gently and steadily rounding up the chickens and herding them back through the fence into their own garden.
